The Harasawa Fellowship

The Japanese Respiratory Society invites you to apply for the Harasawa Fellowship. The terms of the fellowship are below.  Your application is greatly appreciated.

1: Name
This fellowship is named the "Harasawa Fellowship".

2: Aim
The Harasawa Fellowship is part of the international activities organized by the JRS. The aim is to foster young researchers and specialized respiratory clinicians from countries outside of Japan, who will contribute to the progress and development of respiratory study.

3: Object

  1. In principle, applications are accepted from young investigators and clinicians of countries represented by the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) and the Latin American Thoracic Society (ALAT), but applicants from other countries will also be considered.
  2. Applicants should be members of the respiratory society in their own countries.
  3. Age limit: Under 40 (at the date of application)
  4. Priority to residents outside Japan. Non-permanent residents currently studying in Japan may also apply.
  5. Applicants must already have an acceptance from a training institute in Japan.
  6. Applications from recipients of previous grants will not be considered.
  7. Period of stay at the host institute in Japan will be at least 3 months.

4: Management
Funding of this Fellowship is based on donations from the family of the late honorary JRS member Michiyoshi Harasawa, and is additionally supported by the JRS.

5: Outline of the Fellowship and selection of recipients

  1. Grants are given to help non-Japanese nationals who wish to stay in Japan to train in respiratory medicine.
  2. The grant is available for two recipients.  The grant for each recipient is 1,500,000 Japanese yen.
  3. Members of the Harasawa Selection Committee will select the recipients.
  4. When the training is completed the recipient must prepare a report, signed by the host supervisor, and submit it to the JRS.

6: The Selection Committee

  1. The Selection Committee comprises of the following JRS officers: Chairman of the Board of Directors, President, Chairman of the International Relations Committee, Chairman of the Planning Committee and Chairman of the Education Committee.
  2. The applicant’s study plan, the Japanese institute’s facilities, and also the role and contribution to his/her own country after returning, are all considered in the selection process.
