Presidential Greeting

The 60th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Respiratory Society will be held at the Nagoya Congress Center in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture over three days on April 24 (Fri), 25 (Sat) and 26 (Sun), 2020. The Japanese Respiratory Society was established originally as the Japan Society for Diseases of the Chest in 1961. Next year marks the 60th anniversary since our first annual meeting was convened in 1961. Today, the JRS has more than 12,500 members and has emerged as one of Asia's most prominent academic societies covering research, education and examination of respiratory diseases. It is a tremendous honor to be made in charge of the Annual Meeting of this academic society with such great history and tradition.
The theme of the Annual Meeting is "Conquer Respiratory Diseases." We have opted to use the word "conquer" to express the strong determination of those involved in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases. Medical care for respiratory diseases involves a wide and diverse range of knowledge and techniques for treating lung infections such as pneumonia and tuberculosis; malignant tumors of the chest such as lung cancer and mediastinal tumor; lifestyle disease COPD; allergy and autoimmune disorders such as asthma and interstitial pneumonia; and hereditary or non-hereditary rare respiratory diseases, as well as providing respiratory management and rehabilitation for acute and chronic stages. The ratio of these diseases is expected to rise significantly as the population of our society ages. Many respiratory conditions can be classified as common diseases, but they are also intractable diseases at the same time. The JRS should unite in showing to society our commitment to bravely working toward conquering intractable respiratory diseases.
Academically, the JRS's Scientific Assembly is planning a new symposium with continuity, educational lectures and special programs jointly provided with other academic societies. The Scientific Assembly's popular "Year Review" is due to be held twice during the Annual Meeting. We will work together with the ATS, ERS and APSR to hold an international symposium to examine the key issue of internationalization. The small round table discussion has been newly introduced as a place of active discussions among young participants of Japan.
This time, the number of symposium-style programs has been cut back to allow greater time for young researchers' presentations and discussions. Programs that encourage voluntary participation of patients are also planned, as the participation of patients and all other types of stakeholders is an important task. I call on you all to submit many abstracts and conduct research presentations to ensure a great success of the 60th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Respiratory Society.
