The Harasawa Fellowship

The Japanese Respiratory Society invites you to apply for the Harasawa Fellowship. The terms of the application are below.

1: Name
This fellowship is named the "Harasawa Fellowship".

2: Aim
The Harasawa Fellowship is part of the international activities organized by the JRS. The aim is to foster young researchers and specialized respiratory clinicians from countries outside of Japan, who will contribute to the progress and development of respiratory study.

3: Object

  1. In principle, applications are accepted from young investigators and clinicians of countries represented by the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) and the Latin American Thoracic Society (ALAT), but applicants from other countries would also be considered.
  2. Age limit: Under 40
  3. Resident outside Japan. Anyone who has studied in Japan does not qualify.
  4. The applicant should already have an acceptance from a training institute in Japan.
  5. Applications from recipients of previous grants will not be considered.
  6. Period of stay is at least 2 months.

4: Management
Funding of this Fellowship is based on donations from the family of the late honorary member Michiyoshi Harasawa, and is additionally supported by the JRS.

5: Outline of the Fellowship and selection of recipients

  1. Grants are given to help non-Japanese nationals who wish to stay in Japan to train in respiratory medicine.
  2. The number of recipient will be 3.  The maximum grant for each recipient is maximum 1,000,000 yen (150,000 yen per month plus 250,000 yen).
  3. Members of the Harasawa Selection Committee select the recipients.
  4. When the training is completed the recipient must prepare a report, stamped with the host training institute preceptor's seal, and hand it to the JRS.

6: The Selection Committee

  1. The Selection Committee comprises of the following JRS officers: Chairman of the Board of Directors, President, Chairman of the International Relations Committee, Chairman of the Planning Committee and Chairman of the Education Committee.
  2. The candidate's study plan, the Japanese institute's facilities, and also the role and contribution to his/her own country after returning, are all considered in the selection process.

7: Application procedure

  1. Applicants are requested to send the following details in English, to the Japanese Respiratory Society Secretariat.
    (1) Name, date of birth, Japanese institute's name and address, details of the study project and period of stay (6 copies)
    (2) Applicant's education and research history (6 copies)
    (3) Recommendation and research project prepared by the research leader of the Japanese institute (6 copies)
